Folks, I really need help promoting the Second Annual Diabetic Ice Cream Social. A lot of people, even prominent people in our community, are turning it down without understanding it… or taking a moment to really engage in its true spirit.
Every day, a person with diabetes gets diagnosed.
Every day, a person with diabetes gets poorly educated, or not educated at all.
Every day, a person with diabetes gets bullied, and told unimaginably horrible and untrue things about their disease.
You saw the skit Conan O’Brien did the other night on TV, attacking us as diabetics. People have this notion and idea that we are slobs, and pigs, and that we should only eat lettuce all day. Never enjoy anything. People have no idea the amount of moderation, and carb counting, a diabetic practices.
And that’s what I want for this event — I want this as a celebration that we can enjoy ourselves, with moderation. WE make our food choices, and no one needs to police us, especially when they don’t understand our disease.
Or people with food alarmism agendas, and trying to tell others how they ought to eat — with myths, and pseudo science.
We, people with diabetes, can eat ANYTHING in moderation, so long as it agrees with our glucose meters. Heck, we can even make mock alternatives to almost any food. It’s not about sugar, and it has never been about sugar.
Help us spread the word, and educate… break food myths. Support the diabetes online community efforts… and diabetics everywhere.
Why not participate? What’s so wrong with having ONE scoop of ice cream, in moderation? We teach the world ONE healthy habit? We prevent binge eating, out of deprivation from too restrictive diets, thus preventing an eating disordered cycle?
What’s your fear? The Ice Cream Boogieman is NOT going to get you.
