Getting Social With Our Diabetes

Back in July, I published an article by Lizmari M. Collazo on this blog to help promote the Diabetic Ice Cream Social event that she and five other women had created to generate awareness of what is possible as far as food choices, and what diabetes actually is.

From the Facebook page:

Diabetes is NOT about sugar, but about total carbohydrates choices, and moderation!

We diabetics love life, and we can enjoy anything anyone else does, so long as we account and manage our carbohydrates properly.

Amen, sister.

Yesterday was the Second Annual Diabetic Ice Cream Social, and I was one of over 1,000 proud participants. Not bad for a grassroots initiative on a smaller scale. Hopefully awareness will overtake ignorance and grow into something positive for those of us who live with diabetes, regardless of which type we ended up being diagnosed with.

Incidentally, last night’s treat also marked the first time DF and I went to the Cold Stone Creamery location in Old Ottawa South. Needless to say, it didn’t take much effort on my part to win his solidarity. He enjoyed an ice cream cookie sandwich. I ordered an Extra-ORANGE-inary Signature Creation. The wait staff were polite and friendly, and broke into song at the slightest provocation.

All in all, we had an ice cream experience worth budgeting into a meal plan. Nothing to feel guilty or ashamed of. But if anyone out there thinks that I ought to be, I ate salad for dinner tonight, okay? Taco salad, with yogurt-based Salsa Ranch dressing.
